What is the Great Amazon Fishing Rally?
The Great Amazon Fishing Rally (commonly known as Greama) is a fishing rally (competition) similar to the “Paris-Dakar” car race in which the participants continue to fish for five days on the Amazon River.
It has been held since 2019, and the tournament will be held again in 2023. (Yes, right now)
We will deliver detailed information from basic information to the latest information about Greama, which will continue to attract attention.
Who is the organizer?
It is held by the Great Amazon Fishing Rally Association, which was established in Tokyo in 2018 . It seems that it is a Japan-Brazil joint project that is being promoted in collaboration with the state of Brazil .
Location
As the name of the tournament, it is held in the great Amazon River behind Japan .
It is said that it is the last unexplored region on earth, accounting for 1/4 of the river water volume and 1/4 of the freshwater fish in the whole earth, and there are rumors that there are fish that human beings have never seen.

About the charm of Greama
The target fish of Greama’s battle is reminiscent of the battle with unexplored fish, which is stipulated in the six types of impactful Amazon.
The world’s largest scale fish “Piralcu”, the world’s largest freshwater fish “Piraiba”, Amazon river fireworks “Peacock bass”, Tropical fish king “Arowana”, Amazon giant catfish “Piralara”, Amazon river food fighter” Dorada” .
In Brazil, it is an element of excitement that “piraiba”, which can never be caught with a lure and is revered as a “fish of the gods”, is included.
In the Amazon in June and July, the temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius during the day, and fishing for five consecutive days in the absence of shade is an area that none of the players have experienced before. The great attraction of this tournament is how the players develop strategies and fight, and how much they can challenge their limits.
In addition, many creatures such as pink dolphins live in the Amazon, but there are also many ferocious creatures

such as piranhas, stingrays with poisonous stingers, anacondas, crocodiles,
and wild pumas on the trees, so
you can’t go wrong. It will be a tournament where the lives of the players are at stake.

Definition rules about catching
It seems that it is considered a “catch” when all the fish are on board.
In the case of piraiba, pirarucu, and pilarala that are over 1 meter in length and cannot be raised on board,
bring them to the side of the boat (ship’s edge) so that the fish no longer resists, and when the fish are measured at the side of the boat (ship’s edge), shallow water, or near the shore, it is considered a catch. .
Landing is done only by the competitor, and it is forbidden to ask for help from anyone other than the competitor.
It seems to be a rule that if the act of catching the target fish with the help of a non-competitor is discovered, the catch points will be invalidated.
The long length is measured by the straight line distance from the snout (the tip of the fish’s head) to the tail fin with the fish’s mouth completely closed and the tail open. Arowana, Piraiba, and other fish with whiskers are also measured in the same way, and whiskers and filaments are not included in the size.
About this year’s Greama new rules
[Bait fishing OK?] Mr. Kitayama, chairman of the competition rules committee, talks! About the new Greama rules [What is a special stage? ]
1 Basic rules
“Catch points” will be added for each time you catch one or more competition fish that are larger than the measurement size (keeper size) on the specified schedule and place .
If not even one fish is caught, a “penalty” will be imposed on the competition fish (However, for Piraiba and Pilarara, no penalty will be imposed if either one species is caught).
The competitor with the most total catch points throughout the competition period (5 days) will be awarded the title of “Amazon Fishing Master”.
2 Fish capture (catch)
・It is considered to be “caught” when it is put on board .
・In the case of piraiba, piraruku, and piralara exceeding 1 meter, it is OK at the edge of the ship!
・Measurement is for tail opening , no measurement for whiskers and filaments
A “catch” is considered when the entire body of the fish is on board. However, only pilaiba, pirarucu, and pilarara, which are over 1 meter in length and cannot be raised on board, should be brought close to the ship’s side (ship’s edge), the fish will no longer resist, and the fish should be caught when measured at the ship’s side (ship’s edge), shallow water, or near the shore. I reckon.
Quoted from Lure News https://www.lurenewsr.com/264956/
Landing must be done by the competitor alone and no help from anyone other than the competitor is allowed. If the act of catching the competition fish with the help of a non-competitor is discovered, the catch points for the caught competition fish will be invalidated.
The length of the competition fish is measured from the snout (the tip of the fish’s head) to the caudal fin with the mouth completely closed and the tail open. Arowana, Piraiba, and other fish for competition with whiskers and filaments (thread-like fins extending from the tip of the caudal fin, etc.) are also measured in the same way, and whiskers and filaments are not included in the size.
3 Fish measurement
・Measured by referee
・Catch recording sheet is the standard for recording
The “reception card/catch record sheet” is managed by the competitor, and only those measured by the referee using the official measurement scale for the tournament can be entered on the catch record sheet.
Quoted from Lure News https://www.lurenewsr.com/264956/
If the measurement is performed using a scale other than the official measurement scale for the tournament, we will not accept catch points in consideration of accuracy and fairness.
When the referee confirms the measurement of the fish, it is allowed to ask for the help of the pilot and the cameraman (GAFRA cameraman, other media cameraman).
The measurement result must be confirmed and finalized by the referee on the spot where the fish was caught.
The referee records the catch time, measured size, and type of fish on the catch record sheet. Records of fish not signed by both parties shall be invalid.
Competitors must not force judges to provide false information or misrepresent their size.
In order to prepare for the loss of the fishing record sheet and to verify the accuracy of the record, it is desirable to periodically take photographs or videos of the fishing record sheet.
If you lose the catch record sheet, you will not be recognized for catch points. However, if the competition record sheet is filmed by the competitor or a photographer (GAFRA photographer, photographer from other media), and if the competition committee can confirm it along with the video, the fishing result points may be recognized.
4 Deadfish
・No dead fish allowed
From a catch-and-release standpoint, competitors must try to keep the fish they catch alive and make every effort to return them to the river alive.
Quoted from Lure News https://www.lurenewsr.com/264956/
A penalty may be imposed if the umpire admits that the deadfish was deliberately put out.
5 competition time
・Consultation time is from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
・Penalty for late arrival
The competition time is from 7:00 am to 17:00 pm. Competitors must check-in and check-in at the designated time during the competition period.
Quoted from Lure News https://www.lurenewsr.com/264956/
A “reception card/catch recording sheet” will be distributed to competitors who have completed the competition registration. If you are late for the start time (based on the distribution time of “reception card / catch record sheet”), you will be penalized minus 10 points per minute. In addition, if the reception is not done even after 15 minutes from the start time, in addition to the penalty of minus 150 points, the day will be disqualified.
Competitors must register for the competition together with the pilot and receive a “reception card/catch recording sheet” and “official measurement scale for the tournament”. Competitors must manage the “reception card/catch record sheet” and return it each time they return.
At the start, consider safety as much as possible, and start one boat at a time in boat number order (the starting order will be reversed on the following day).
Return the “reception card / catch record sheet” to the reception, and when it is accepted, it will be accepted as a return reception. If you are late for the finish time, you will be penalized minus 10 points for every minute. Also, if the competitor does not return 15 minutes after the end time, in addition to the penalty of minus 150 points, they will be disqualified for the day.
For delays in return due to outboard motor failure, hull damage, or other troubles that cannot be avoided by the competitor, the referees, pilots, GAFRA photographers, and the competition committee will discuss the situation and decide whether to consider it as a delay in return. In addition, regarding problems such as outboard motor failure and hull damage, as well as unavoidable early arrivals due to the poor health of pilots, referees, and cameramen, the referees, pilots, GAFRA cameramen, and the competition committee will similarly discuss and make necessary arrangements. shall take action.
In the event of trouble such as outboard motor failure or hull damage, or if the pilot, referee, cameraman, etc. complain of poor physical condition, take the best measures on the spot, such as switching to a patrolling media boat, take appropriate measures, and return promptly. to do.
6 Boats and capacity
・Pilots are on the same boat! (And this will cause ripples!?)
Competitors use one boat per person and use boats of approximately the same size equipped with outboard motors of approximately the same horsepower provided by the organizer. This is not the case for Judge boats.
Quoted from Lure News https://www.lurenewsr.com/264956/
Competitor boats can carry up to 3 people: a competitor, a pilot and a photographer. A referee boat can accommodate up to three people: a referee (who also serves as a pilot) and a cameraman (maximum of two people).
7 タックルおよび道具
・Lure only (excluding the 3rd day)
・Possible pole
・Sonar cannot be used. Electric motors are prohibited.
Only lures are allowed, live bait and anything considered bait is prohibited. Violation may result in disqualification. However, only on “Special Stage (SS) = Catfish Challenge Day)”, catfish (Piraiba, Pilarara) caught with a lure as bait will be recognized as a catch. Points will also be accepted for competition fish caught with a lure on the Special Stage (SS).
Quoted from Lure News https://www.lurenewsr.com/264956/
If you use more than one rod/reel at the same time, including a standing rod, you will be disqualified. However, it is allowed to use multiple rods and reels, including standing rods, at the same time only on special stages (SS).

・Shore fishing possible
The competition area is a water area that can be reciprocated from the start point with 20 liters of fuel x 1 tank (including water areas connected when the water level rises and dammed lakes). However, excluding prohibited areas designated by the competition committee.
Quoted from Lure News https://www.lurenewsr.com/264956/
In water areas connected to rivers, if it is difficult to enter due to fallen trees, etc., it is allowed to remove them manually with hatchets, saws, etc., and proceed ahead. The use of equipment such as chainsaws is prohibited.
Competitors may push their competitor boats by hand with the help of a pilot and cameraman on board their competitor boats. Competitor boats may not be pushed forward with the cooperation of other competitors.
